Hetta Coffey is a sassy Texan with a snazzy yacht and she's not afraid to use it!

After several months of cruising Mexico's hauntingly beautiful Sea of Cortez, Hetta's in Puerto Escondido, a place once described by author John Steinbeck as "a magic harbor". Anchored out, swaying on the hook at the whim of breeze and tide, surrounded by magnificent views and turquoise water can be magical. Stuck at anchor alone? Not so much.

So when her best friend, Jan, gets them an invite to a party at a nearby luxury resort hosted by a Japanese businessman - all expenses paid - Hetta figures, why not? Why turn down an evening of free food and booze? And besides, what could possibly go wrong?

With Hetta involved? Plenty.

Not only are she and Jan soon up to their necks in hot sake, a succession of unsavory intruders sends Hetta scurrying for a safe harbor, but not before she reaches the conclusion that some folks just need killin'.

Just Needs Killin' Hetta Coffey Series Book 6 (Audible Audio Edition) Jinx Schwartz Stevie Puckett Books

This is one of my favorite series by a very good author. Each of these books is very good on their own, but are best read in order. The characters are well defined and fun to follow. Where Jinx really shines are in two areas. One is when she writes about boats and sailing. It is apparent she has a lot of personal knowledge about sailing. The plot devices ring so true because she knows what she is writing about. The second area her books shine in is when she writes the funny and sassy things that come out of Hetta's mouth. They truly are funny and ring true when you read them. I have a friend with a similar mindset and she is a hoot like Hetta. I read at least five books a month and I would highly recommend this series. What a good read!

Just Needs Killin' Hetta Coffey Series Book 6 (Audible Audio Edition) Jinx Schwartz Stevie Puckett Books Reviews

You would think after reading all six books in the Hetta Coffey series the stories would start to be the same. Not at all! I have more laugh out loud guffaws than any other books I've read and still keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to see how she gets out of this one! And we all want a best friend like Jan. The dialogue is fast and witty and wonderful. If number 7 was written I would be nose deep in it by now!
Hetta needs a vacation. She's in the area of some of the most beautiful beaches and she needs a vacation. ...? Well with her and Jan's luck they probably should give Mexico a break and take one.
Hetta joins Jan on Chino's expedition ship for part of the summer while they do research of a possible location of a sunken ship some 400+ years ago. While they are on their expedition they notice that the two Oriental mates take off everyday on their Pangas and usually return a couple of hours later. So they investigate their ship mates wear abouts and find their location and spy on them and think t hey are bringing up gold bars which would be treasures of the ship and worth plenty of m o n e y.
As t hey move forward with their investigation they wind up stirring t he pot and with that comes trouble. Which for both Hetta and Jan means serious trouble but also puts the rest of t h e crew in danger as well. They find the g old aboard the ship. The Chinese guys notify their team who overtake the ship. These are real bad guys and lives are in danger.
Hetta usually finds h e r way out of these fixes but with most the crew on a weekend away from the ship with just herself, Jan and the Chinese things look rough. Will they go down with the ship, find a way out or be killed?
I've finished all six of the Hetta Coffey series and I'm so sorry that there aren't more. The characters are well defined and Hetta and Jan are in trouble most of the time. One of the things that draws me in is the humor. This author has a gift.

Just Needs Killin’
Hetta Coffey Mysteries, Book 6
By Jinx Schwartz

“Just Needs Killin’” is the 6th and, as of this review on September 20, 2014, the final book in the Hetta Coffey Mystery series. Hetta is a single 30-40 yr old (39 at the start of the series/40 from the 4th book on) who lives her life on the edge – perhaps the edge of sanity. She is a civil engineer who lost her job with a big company, but thanks to a friend, Trob, in the company, receives independent contracting jobs from that same firm. She’s sold her home and purchased a live-in yacht, for which she and her bff, Jan, serve as crew. In the first few books, she is basically in California, but early in the series she takes jobs that have her analyzing project costs in different locales in Mexico. Along the way, she loses her beloved dog, R.J., and names her new yacht after him (Raymond Johnson), finds her true love (she hopes) in Jenks Jenkins, and collects a very interesting set of characters, including a dog, Po' Thing, she rescues from along the highway. Some of this cast of characters love her and some definitely do not.

In this episode, she is finishing up a small job with a mine in Mexico, feeling pretty much between jobs and wondering what she’ll do when this job ends at the end of the summer. She’s sitting in dock in Puerto Escondido, a short drive to her mine job. Jenks is in Dubai doing his engineering thing. Jan is in Magdalena Bay with her S.O., Brigido Comacho Yee (Chino), a marine biologist who specialized in whales. Jan shows up unexpectedly in Puerto Escondido, needing Hetta’s help in smoozing a Japanese investor in Chino’s pet project – the search for a lost Spanish galleon on which his ancestors first arrived in the Magdalena Bay in 1600. When the investor turns up dead in his hotel room, Hetta and Jan are on the job, searching for the perpetrators, and, eventually on the run from the same. In order to hide, they leave a false trail for the baddies to follow, while they high-tail it back to Magdalena Bay to join in Chino’s treasure hunt. Chaos ensues.

Schwartz has crafted another fun and funny adventure for Hetta and her minions. Murder, mayhem, scuba diving, a dognapping and frantic chases abound. Good editing and proofreading. Nice pacing. Fun plot. And, I was relieved that not one “lit-tle” was found in this or the last novel. I was also glad that, unlike the last two novels (4 & 5), there was no misinformed reference to the Islamic religion.

All in all, this may have been my favorite of the 5 books in the series I read. I was inventive, believable, and had lots of actions scenes for the dog. Hey, what’s not to like about that? I’ll put this series on my “watch” list and maybe if another episode surfaces next year, I’ll reacquaint myself with the Coffey crew.
This is one of my favorite series by a very good author. Each of these books is very good on their own, but are best read in order. The characters are well defined and fun to follow. Where Jinx really shines are in two areas. One is when she writes about boats and sailing. It is apparent she has a lot of personal knowledge about sailing.
